Forgotten Female Composers Series. CITY SOUNDSCAPES

The second season of the Forgotten Female Composers Series, directed by Lysistrata Chamber Collective, is in full swing!

This series exclusively features music by female and non-binary composers from past to present; we share music that shouldn't go unheard, discover new stories together, and reflect on what can be learnt from untold histories.

CITY SOUNDSCAPES. Inspired by urban spaces

Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.” - Jane Jacobs (1916-2006)

Cities - Budapest, Buenos Aires, Paris, Prague, Manhattan, Munich and Vienna, to name a few, have been central to the works of many composers. Specific architecture and infrastructure, being surrounded by people of many cultures, creates a special vibe and energy unique to each city. This all inspires sounds, structures and harmonies making the music distinctly related to the home city of its composer. We are looking forward to sharing these unique sounds and atmospheres from Alma Mahler’s Die stille Stadt’ - the calm city, to Gabriella Lena Franks’ bustling Manhattan Serenade, moving through the sad stories of Chernobyl with Felicitas Kuckuck’s Tschernobyl in tausend Kinderschuhen into sharing joy and exuberance in Claudia Montero’s Suite de los Buenos Aires.

There will also be a special selection of wines from EKHI, the first wine brand dedicated to French women winemakers. Just as in the music world, the names and stories of women winemakers are still to be discovered in viticulture circles - be it professional or public.

Forgotten Female Composers Series - SONGS OF THE FOREST

Welcome to the second season of the Forgotten Female Composers Series directed by Lysistrata Chamber Collective

This series exclusively features music by female and non-binary composers from past to present; we share music that shouldn't go unheard, discover new stories together, and reflect on what can be learnt from untold histories.

SONGS OF THE FOREST. Exploring the sounds of nature

Nature is our chapel ” - Björk (*1965)

As spring turns to summer, many of us are spending more time in nature: swimming in lakes, picnicking, shooing away wasps, and finding shade beneath the trees. Forest sounds have inspired various composers throughout history, whether they choose to depict imaginary scenes, like Lili Boulanger does with the sounds of nature’s awakening in D’Un Matin de Printemps, or to draw directly on the forest soundscapes for inspiration, such as the bird calls in Sofia Gubaidulina’s Forest Sounds. In this concert, we will bring the outdoors inside with these pieces and many more.

Join us as we welcome the return of summer.

Forgotten Female Composers Series - SOUNDS OF THE WINDS

The second season of the Forgotten Female Composers Series directed by Lysistrata Chamber Collective is opening!

A series dedicated exclusively to music composed by women, from past to present; a place for curious minds to listen to new music that shouldn't go unheard, discover new stories, reflect on what can yet be learnt from history and from stories that are still untold.

SOUNDS OF THE WINDS. Music for woodwinds & more

And all the winds go sighing, for sweet things dying” - Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830/1894)

A captivating selection of pieces for wind trio places the spotlight squarely on wind instruments, exploring a unique and memorable acoustic landscape. These instruments, fueled by the human breath, evoke the poetic duality of the word “wind” as a natural phenomenon. Consequently the programme will be complemented by a group of carefully chosen songs for piano and voice – words, that just like the “sounds of the wind” are floating on vocalised air.

There will also be a special selection of wines from EKHI, the first wine brand dedicated to French women winemakers. Just as in the music world, the names and stories of women winemakers are still to be discovered in viticulture circles - be it professional or public.

Women in Love - Liederabend

A Liederabend that takes on the female perspective on matters of the heart and explores how women's emotions and experiences are represented in the music of the past and present.

The program builds a bridge between two different eras and locations:

Germany in the 19th century, where the artist couple Robert and Clara Schumann composed love songs with and for each other, and the USA from the late 20th century to the present - a place where the romantic art song of European tradition was reinterpreted in a modern way.

Works by Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, Aaron Copland, Dale Trumbore, Samuel Barber and John Hall.

A series dedicated exclusively to music composed by women, from past to present; a place for curious minds to listen to new music that shouldn't go unheard, discover new stories, reflect on what can yet be learnt from history and from stories that are still untold.

NOCTURNE. Songs of sleep and dreams.

“Night, when words fade and things come alive. When the destructive analysis of day is done, and all that is truly important becomes whole and sound again.” — Anaïs Nin (1903-1977)

Night, darkness, sleep, dreams… all have been interpreted as good as well as bad, yet undoubtedly mysterious and hiding treasures or terrors.

Embark on an musical journey with us, into the contemplative essence of the night sky and the depth of the darkness, delving into the mysteries of sleep and the vast realms of dreams, and about the universal yet deeply personal sanctuary that is our nightly reprieve, through music inspired by these images all by female composers from the past and the present.

MYTHS & FAIRYTALES. Ancient stories brought to life

“As for fairy tales, he understood that they were reflections of the people who had spun them, and were flecked with little truths - intrusions of reality into fantasy, like toast crumbs on a wizard's beard.” — Laini Taylor (1971-)

Myths & Fairytales are part of the oldest human's storytelling. They have been modified in time, adapted and reinterpreted. This concert will explore a selection of myths and fairytales through music, through the eyes of contemporary women as well as women from the past. The event will also feature actor Janina Picard narrating "Circe" based on Madeline Miller's novel.

A place for curious minds to listen to new music that shouldn't go unheard, discover new stories, reflect on what can yet be learnt from history and from stories that are still untold.

ROOTS. Connecting folk music of the world

"Folk music has a sort of bubbling-under quality. The stream runs through the cultural consciousness, and whether or not it's on the radio is not the issue. Folk music is always there." — Mary Travers (1936-2009)

A program designed to travel through different cultures and explore the music inspired by its own roots - so to speak from the ground up. Folk music has always triggered curiosity and inspiration in classical music composers, and tonight we'll explore how women from different time periods and countries around the world were inspired by the cultures around them, the roots that both grounded and catapulted them to compose these one of a kind works. The energy of each one is unique and palpable. An evening to remember and reflect on the grounding power of music.

There will also be a special selection of wines from EKHI, the first wine brand dedicated to French women winemakers. Just as in the music world, the names and stories of women winemakers are still to be discovered in viticulture circles - be it professional or public.

Forgotten Female Composers Concert Series feat. VULVA VOCE

This ongoing concert series directed by Lysistrata Chamber Collective is dedicated exclusively to classical music composed by women, from past to present. A place for curious minds to listen to new music that shouldn't go unheard, discover new stories, reflect on what can yet be learnt from history and from stories that are still untold.

For this concert we are thrilled to feature a young dynamic female String Quartet: VULVA VOCE.

"Rarely have I felt so moved (and frankly, knocked sideways) by a string ensemble performance." Michelle Phillips RNCM

Vulva Voce is a UK based genre-defying string quartet that brings exciting, dynamic performances of music composed by women and underrepresented voices to spaces and venues beyond the concert hall. Their mission is to break away from long held conventions of classical music and the string quartet, presenting audiences with radical and refreshing musical experiences. With experiences in folk, jazz, improvisation, contemporary classical and experimental music making, their performances are a unique delve into female composers from across centuries. Existing works are blended with their own arrangements and original material, and presented free of any sheet music, incorporating movement, storytelling, spoken word and musical freedom.

This concert will take you all the way from Renaissance madrigals written by cool nuns in the 1500s, through lush 19th century African-American Romanticism and Scottish Gaelic folk song, right up to works by some of the most exciting contemporary female composers, including specially commissioned works and Vulva Voce's own original material.

Vulva Voce are delighted to be collaborating with pianist Lucia Brighenti, from Lysistrata Chamber Collective, for part of this performance.

Forgotten Female Composers #4: AGATHE BACKER-GRØNDAHL

Talk// Performance #4: Agathe Backer-Grøndahl (1847-1907)

FORGOTTEN FEMALE COMPOSERS #4: is the fourth talk of a new series exploring the works and lives of the women composers throughout history who have fallen into obscurity through no other fault than their gender.

On a monthly basis we'll be discovering and exploring names that aren't yet well known, and delve a little deeper into ones that haven't been completely lost to history. We'll explore the historical and socio-political situations that led to their work being devalued, and find out what we can learn from their life and work. The format of each evening will be an introductory talk, a short performance or excerpt of their work, and an open discussion afterwards.

In a time where the world is fast starting to ask questions about those left behind, the classical music establishment is slow to move its feet: it is time to start understanding and belatedly acknowledging the trailblazers from the past, as well as provide a space to appreciate and celebrate their work
